Advocacy & Training
One sign of a great therapist is that they are continually learning and growing.
Within the Oklahoma Mental Health and Substance Abuse organization is the training institute, which supplies Oklahoma with various opportunities for further development of skills through ongoing education, CEUs, and certifications that signify the completion of different trainings.
Some of the trainings listed include Wraparound training, Motivational Interviewing, and Adult Mental Health First Aid Training. These trainings are available for LPCs and LPC candidates, but they are also available for behavioral health aides, case managers, and other mental health care providers.
One major issue the Training Institute focuses on and offers training on is self-care for the purpose of preventing burnout. Burnout can lead to poor practice in counselors, which negatively impacts the client, the counselor, and the community. Practicing self-care on the individual level is important, and so is the organizational level of protecting counselors through providing training and opportunities to practice self-care through time off and organizational structure.
